Our team of chefs know how to make great pub meals and we do it well, every day. We’ve recently upgraded our menu and there’s plenty of tasty new dishes to try alongside all the old favourites.

We’re independently owned, giving us the ability to choose and control our produce, our menu, our drinks list. Our expert team of chefs and bartenders know how to bring you the very best. We are agile and adapt to what the locals want. When we get constructive reviews and feedback, we make changes and improvements, which keeps our locals always coming back for more.
A proud history since 1874 and a new modern era
We began in 1874 as the Freer’s Family Hotel with the building designed by architect M Hennessy, who also designed the Meagher’s Family Hotel in City Road and the Maori Chief Hotel in Moray Street. Parts of the original hotel remain including the slate roof, chimneys and double-hung sash windows.
Famous publican Annie Bell took over the licence in 1935, renaming it to Bells Hotel, which stayed with the family until 2013, making the family one of South Melbourne’s longest pub license holders.
Extensive additions, refurbishments and modifications have taken place in recent years, creating this stunning event space the people of South Melbourne and beyond will love and enjoy for decades to come.

We’re in the heart of South Melbourne on the corner of Moray Street and Coventry Street. We’re just a quick walk from tram stops #55 on Kings Way, #1 on Eastern Road and #12 on Clarendon Street. Otherwise there’s street parking, with Melbourne CBD a short 8-minute drive away.
